Strong Winds Slam Parts of the State

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WGBW) – The threat for damaging high winds, large hail and heavy downpours sweeps across the state with a severe thunderstorm watch issued.

A cold front is pushing into the hot and humid airmass and lifting strong storms. It started around lunch on Monday, when a Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for good chunk of Wisconsin.

By 2 p.m., high winds whipped and did some damage in severe warned thunderstorms on Monday June 23.

In central Wisconsin, winds were clocked gusting to 69 mph at Alexander Field, at South Wood County Airport. Trees were also torn down in Port Edwards with 62 mph winds and reports of more trees were tumbled on top of power lines in Nekoosa.

Video of an overturned semi was also seen traveling eastbound on US 10 near Amherst Jct. just before 2:30 in the afternoon.

Several reports of trees were also spread across roads in the northwest part of Waushara County, in Wautoma, Wild Rose, Appleton and Green Bay.

An Emergency Manager in Green Bay reports a traffic light was blown down near the Tilleman bridge, blocking traffic. Several trees were also reported down across the east side, including one on a car. No injuries reported. 58 mph wind gusts were observed at the Green Bay Airport.

Round two sparked up around 5 p.m. with severe warned storms rolling at Vernon county, where an Emergency Manager reported a tree fell on to a car in the City of Hillsboro. 

30 minutes later, a Juneau county Emergency Manager said streets were flooding in Mauston and Lyndon Station. The Wisconet site at Cutler measured 0.27″ of rain in 5 minutes and 0.68″ of rain in 30 minutes. In total, the City of Tomah recorded close to 5.00″ of rain.

50 mph gusts caused pine trees to fall just north of Neshkoro and south of Redgranite just after 6 p.m. Large trees were blocking the road at County CC and 4th avenue in Waushara County.

A tree was also reported down in the city of Richland Center and damage to trees in Lima.

Powerlines were also pushed down, by Brandon Fire Department by 6:30 p.m. Sauk, Green Lake, Marquette and Columbia counties all have many reports of numerous trees down in a scattered fashion across all these counties. The NWS Milwaukee says there might be more concentrated tree damage from northern Sauk into western Columbia counties.
